After a competitive first half, Orlando Pirates unleashed a volley of goals to overwhelm visitors Marumo Gallants by a stunning 8-1 score in their South African Premiership match on Tuesday at Orlando Stadium. Tshegofatso Mabasa scored a second half hat-trick and Thalente Mbatha added two goals as Gallants completely lost the plot in the face of a motivated Pirates attack, conceding seven unanswered goals after halftime.

Heavy rains in the Johannesburg area postponed the kickoff but Pirates got right to work with a goal inside the opening thirty seconds. A long ball over the top of the Gallants defense deflected off the head of a defender right to Deon Hotto on the left wing and the Namibia national team star's cross ricocheted off Gallants defender Kenneth Nthatheni and past helpless goalkeeper Washington Arubi.

But the visitors appeared to find their focus and composure, equalizing in the 23rd minute. Pirates defender and captain Nkosinathi Sibisi could only get a slight boot to a through pass from midfield by Gallants' Monde Mpambaniso and striker Gabadinho Mhango was there to pounce. The Malawi national team star collected the loose ball before dispatching his finish past Pirates keeper Sipho Chaine.

However after halftime it was a brutal display of superiority from hosts Pirates who took less than ninety seconds after the second half whistle to move ahead when Mabasa fired in from a cross by Deano van Rooyen. Mabasa was then set up by Hotto to make it a two-goal lead five minutes later.

Right back van Rooyen collected a rare goal close to the hour mark and then Mabasa finished his hat-trick before Mbatha scored the first of his two goals. A penalty kick from Boitumelo Radiopane completed the humiliation for Gallants who are in 12th position on ten points from ten matches. Pirates stay within reach of leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, three points back but with one less match played.
