Mamelodi Sundowns did just enough to secure a 2-1 victory against Betway Premiership cellar dwellers Magesi FC on Wednesday at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

Magesi, who stunned Sundowns to win the final of the Carling Knockout Cup in late November, opened the scoring through a Wonderboy Makhubu header inside fifteen minutes. Despite putting out a lineup that was mostly first choice, Sundowns struggled to find their rhythm against an opponent in freefall that had failed to win in six matches since their cup triumph.

However, the reigning South African champions rallied in the second half with a 64th minute leveler from Lucas Ribeiro. The Brazilian playmaker arrived with a crashing volley after compatriot Arthur Sales nodded down a floated cross. Peter Shalulile appeared to give Sundowns the lead after but his headed goal was controversially disallowed by the offside flag.

Sales was joined by fellow substitute Tashreeq Matthews in making an impact when the former Borussia Dortmund player completed the comeback with a late winner in the 86th minute. Sales received the ball at the edge of the penalty area and passed over to Matthews whose attempt at a curling shot took a deflection on its way past Magesi goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze for the match winner.

Sundowns are now six points clear of closest competitors Orlando Pirates at the top of the Betway Premiership table. The Brazilians return to the pitch on Saturday for a Nedbank Cup clash against lower league opposition.
