SuperSport United have parted ways with seasoned coach Gavin Hunt, leaving the Pretoria-based team languishing in the relegation zone of South Africa’s elite Betway Premiership.

SuperSport released a statement on Friday, saying Bafana Bafana legend Andre Arendse, whose substantive role is goalkeeper coach, will serve as an interim head coach with Goalkeeper Coach Grant Johnson as his assistant.

“SuperSport United FC and Head Coach Gavin Hunt have reached a mutual agreement to part ways with immediate effect. The board and management of the Club have expressed their appreciation to Hunt for the work he has done as Head Coach over many years,” the statement reads.

“We remain convinced that Gavin still has much to contribute to South African and African football given his extensive knowledge and experience. We will always remain grateful for the impact he has had on the club and South African football.”

The club’s board of directors let go of the veteran mentor on Thursday after posting just three wins this year, leaving the club second from bottom with nine league games to go.

A firm believer in the European direct and long ball game, Hunt is a cult hero at SuperSport after leading them to three league titles between 2008 and 2010 in his initial spell.

The four-time league winner, including with Bidvest Wits FC, rejoined the club in 2022 after an ill-fated stint at Kaizer Chiefs but struggled.

While Hunt has paid the price for posting just 10 wins in 21 league games this campaign, SuperSport have been struggling of late due to an aging squad and inability to buy quality players to compete with the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.
