Mechal beat archrivals Saint George 4-3 in week 10 of the Ethiopian Premier League to cement their lead. The military side also known as Defence Force came from 2-0 down to down the Horsemen in Dire Dawa.
Goals from Amanuel Erbo and new signing Biniyam Fikru gave the Addis Ababa giants a 2-0 lead on Tuesday but Minyelu Wendimu, Bereket Desta, Shemeles Bekele and Frimpong Mensu scored to turn around the result in favor of Mechal.
Mechal coach GebreKristos Birara shrugged off title talk and claimed it is too early to talk about it. “We can’t say much now. The competition is at the early stage. We only played 9 games. To talk about title credential at this stage to me is being naïve.”
Mechal signed some of the big names in Ethiopian football before starting the season on a high note. They were runners-up in the 2023/24 season and Birara claimed if they want to get crowned champions they should replicate such form:
“If we want to be champions, we should follow similar approach. My players fully understand this,” said Birara.
Mechal have amassed 20 points as they lead the Ethiopian Premier League with a game in hand. Bahirdar Ketema are second with 17 points. Saint George are 10th with 11 points.
