It is official! RS Berkane are champions of Morocco's top division Botola Pro for the first time in their history!
Union Touarga did well to come back and secure a 1-1 draw at the Stade Municipal Berkane on Saturday evening but the atmosphere was joyous throughout for hosts RSB. Oussama Lamlioui opened the scoring for RSB in the second half with his ninth league goal of the season before Younes Dahmani leveled for the visitors, hardly dampening the mood of the Orange Boys supporters.
RSB have won the Throne Cup three times, the CAF Confederation Cup twice and the CAF Super Cup once but the elusive league title will feel most special of all. With the international break coming up, RSB can now focus their efforts on capturing another CAF Confederation Cup when the quarterfinals begin in early April with a duel against Ivorian giants ASEC Mimosas.
While the title is decided, there is still plenty of drama to be had in the race for Morocco's second CAF Champions League berth. Wydad AC took a step backwards on Saturday with a 1-1 draw at IR Tanger. Thembinkosi Lorch, on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns, scored his first goal for Rulani Mokwena's side but Haytham El Bahja leveled late for the hosts.
Wydad, now in fourth place, are level on 43 points with Rabat's Fath Union Sport and two points back of CAF Champions League quarterfinalists AS FAR who won 3-1 against Maghreb Fez on Friday evening. Youssef El Fahli scored twice in the victory for the Royal Army club who will have the challenge of trying to finish second while competing in continental competition.
