Botswana Premier League’s Orapa United have been dealt a blow ahead of the CAF Confederation Cup match against ASEC Mimosas on Sunday following coach Dimitar Pantev’s resignation.
The Bulgarian resigned four days after the Ostriches debuted in the CAF Confederation Cup with a humiliating 6-0 loss to USM Alger at Stade Juliet 1962 stadium in Algeria.
Orapa United, who are also called Ostriches, have released a statement confirming the exit of Pantev, barely five months into his one-year contract.
“Orapa United Football Club announces that Head Coach Pantev has resigned from his position, and both parties have agreed to amicably part ways. The club is grateful for his dedication and the contributions he has made during his tenure,” the statement reads.
The Bulgarian is credited with earning the Ostriches debut qualification to the Confederation Cup stages. Pantev is the second coach to lose a job in the top-flight league of Botswana this week alone after Township Rollers sacked Mogotsi Mpote.
Orapa’s next Confederation Cup assignment is against the Ivorian giants ASEC at Obed Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown on Sunday followed by a duel against Senegalese side ASC Jaraaf on December 15, 2024. Orapa United are currently in eighth place in the domestic league standings.
