After leading Uganda’s U-17 football team, The Cubs to victory in the 2024 Cecafa U-17 Championship at Hamz Stadium, head coach Brian Ssenyondo has shifted focus to the 2025 AFCON U-17 tournament in Morocco.
Ssenyondo, supported by his technical team, including Ronald Ssali and Dennis Kizito, expressed gratitude for the achievement, attributing the success to the players, technical staff, FUFA management, schools, academies, media and fans.
Moments after lifting the CECAFA trophy, Ssenyondo outlined his ambitious target for Morocco: qualifying for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
“I am happy for the achievement of winning the CECAFA U-17 trophy. Special thanks go to the players, fellow coaches, schools, academies, clubs, FUFA management, media, and the fans. We embark on the preparations for the AFCON U-17 tournament with immediate effect as our target is one: to qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup,” Ssenyondo remarked.
Uganda secured the Cecafa title in dramatic fashion, overcoming an early setback to defeat Tanzania 2-1 in the final. Tanzanian forward Abel Josiah Samson opened the scoring in the 11th minute. The Cubs responded in the second half with a determined display.
Arafat Nkoola equalized in the 62nd minute and James Bogere sealed the win in the 87th minute, sparking celebrations at Hamz Stadium. Ssenyondo credited early preparation, including participation in school football championships and intensive training camps, as key to the team’s success.
“We started preparations early, focusing on schools’ football championships and holding camps with several build-up matches. The boys showed resilience, togetherness, and discipline throughout. This victory is dedicated to FUFA President Moses Magogo,” added Ssenyondo.
The Cubs and runners-up Tanzania booked their spots in the AFCON U-17 tournament, where they will vie for World Cup qualification. With the Cecafa title in hand, Ssenyondo and The Cubs are now focused on achieving their World Cup dream.
