Bright Anukani’s journey to football greatness is a tale of determination, resilience and raw talent nurtured against all odds. From a childhood marked by financial challenges to becoming one of Uganda's finest creative midfielders currently.

The 24-year-old KCCA FC star has carved his name among the nation’s football elite. Early Days and Family Struggles Born on June 26, 2000, in Luzira to Teddy Nalukwago and Charles Anukani, Bright’s passion for football was evident from a young age.

However, his dreams faced early resistance. “Growing up, I wanted to play football, but it was tough. My parents couldn’t afford school fees or even basic football equipment like boots or balls,” he recalls. Undeterred, Anukani would sneak out to play football with friends, often returning home late and exhausted.

His parents, fearing for his safety and skeptical of football as a career, tried to dissuade him. “Sometimes they beat me or locked me in the house,” he shares. The Turning Point Anukani’s breakthrough came while playing at Luzira Primary School when coach Sserumaga spotted his talent and approached his parents.

He convinced them that their son’s abilities could earn him a football bursary. The opportunity was a relief for his parents, who were struggling to meet educational costs. With their consent, Anukani transferred to Citizen Parents School in Makindye, where he thrived both academically and on the pitch.

His excellence saw him earn another bursary at London College in Nansana and later at Dynamic SS in Mukono, where he completed his secondary education. Football Takes Center Stage Anukani’s rise to prominence began in 2016 during the Hon. Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda tournament in Bweyogerere.

Representing Castilla FC, he dazzled fans and scouts with his creativity, leading his team to the title and earning a move to Proline FC in 2017. At Proline, his impact was immediate. He guided the team to Uganda Premier League promotion and the FUFA Big League title, scoring 10 goals and providing numerous assists.

His efforts earned him the FUFA Big League Most Valuable Player award. National Team Breakthrough Anukani’s talent caught the attention of Uganda Cranes coaches, earning him his first call-up under Jonathan McKinstry in 2019. He made an impression at the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup, finishing as joint top scorer with three goals and helping Uganda lift the trophy.

Professional Career and Achievements After a successful loan spell at KCCA FC in 2020, Anukani moved to Vipers SC in 2021. Over three seasons, he won two Uganda Premier League titles and two Uganda Cup trophies. In 2024, following the expiry of his contract, Anukani rejoined KCCA FC, where he continues to shine.

A Role Model for the Next Generation Anukani credits his success to hard work and inspiration from football icons Muzamir Mutyaba and Ibrahim Sadam in Uganda, as well as Spain’s Cesc Fàbregas and Andrés Iniesta. His exceptional vision, passing, and scoring ability have earned him a regular spot in the Uganda Cranes setup and recognition as one of the country’s top creative midfielders.

For his mother, Teddy Nalukwago, her son’s achievements are a testament to the importance of nurturing talent. “I never wanted him to play football, but when Coach Sserumaga showed us the opportunities, we supported him. Now, he supports us. Parents should let their children pursue their dreams,” she advises.

The Road Ahead At just 24 years old, Bright Anukani’s story is far from over. As he continues to light up Uganda’s football scene, he remains an inspiration to many young players aspiring to overcome challenges and achieve greatness. His journey underscores the transformative power of passion, persistence, and belief in oneself.
