Stellenbosch FC’s defender Ismael Toure has explained why Sunday’s CAF Confederation Cup Group B contest against CD Lunda Sul holds the key to the South African team’s progression to the knockout stage.
The Ivorian said this as the Cape Town-based team prepares to welcome the Angolans at Loftus Stadium in Pretoria in the return match after winning 1-0 in the first leg played in Luanda last month.
“The remaining three group stage matches are all finals for us, and we have to rectify our previous mistakes [from our first two matches] if we want to qualify for the next round,” Toure told Stellenbosch website.
“We beat Lunda Sul in Angola but that doesn’t mean it will be an easy match because they are a very good team, so it will be up to us to make sure we do the right things and give everything to come away with the win.”
Toure said he is familiar with continental football, having featured in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup competitions with clubs such as ASEC Mimosas back home and Marumo Gallants in South Africa.
“I try my best to show my experience and help the club and my teammates who are experiencing it for the first time, and hopefully steer Stellenbosch further in the competition,” he added.
In the first leg match in Luanda, Devin Titus fired the South Africans to victory with his headed goal in the 80th minute at Estadio Nacional 11 de Novembro on Sunday, 11th December 2024.
The win saw the Betway Premiership outfit ending a run of two consecutive defeats, 1-3 loss to Morocco’s RB Berkane of Morocco and 2-0 to Stade Malien in Mali. Lunda are bottom of the group with one point whereas the South Africans have three points, a point behind Malien and six points adrift of behind leaders Berkane.
