Egypt's Al Masry put themselves in a strong position on Wednesday in their CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal clash, defeating Tanzanian giants Simba SC 2-0 in the first leg at home.
Abderrahim Deghmoum scored from distance in the first half and a late goal from Nigerian striker John Ebuka provided one more blow to the hopes of Simba. An intriguing second leg awaits in Dar es Salaam where Simba's infamous home advantage will need to be used to full effect for the Reds of Msimbazi.
The first leg was an even affair with several good opportunities for the visitors, particularly in the second half. Simba forward Leonel Ateba whipped in a dangerous free kick on goal from the left wing in the 52nd minute but Simba failed to convert the rebound after Masry goalkeeper Mahmoud Gad spilled the ball.
Ateba scuffed another decent chance in the 76th minute and Shomari Kapombe's powerful 87th minute effort from twenty yards was well blocked by Gad. Which made it more frustrating when Simba keeper Moussa Camara punched a Masry cross off Ebuka, resulting in the ball ricocheting back into Camara's goal to complete a poor performance from the Guinean shot stopper.
The two teams will meet in a highly anticipated second leg in Dar es Salaam in one week's time.
