Simba SC head coach Fadlu Davids has backed DR Congo striker Elie Mpanzu to start scoring goals for the club following his impressive display in the 2-0 Caf Confederation Cup win against CS Constantine on Sunday.
Though he did not score in the final Group A fixture, Mpanzu played a key role as he set up Denis Kibu to notch the second and this was after Leonel Ateba had opened the scores for the Wekundu wa Msimbazi at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Asked to explain the overall performance of the forward, who signed for the team from AS Vita Club of Burundi, the South Africa coach remained optimistic that he will start to find the back of the net soon.
“I'm very happy with Mpanzu. You know, it's difficult if you take a curriculum of six months and try to squeeze it all into a short space of time,” Davids said as quoted by Daily News.
“Which position do I have to take? Do I have to be wide? Do I have to be inside? Do I have to make counter-movements?
“I'm talking about the attacking structure, not even the defensive part. There's a lot of detail that goes into how we press, when we press, in which direction we press.”
On whether Mpanzu had adapted well, Davids replied: “So I'm extremely happy how he's adapted, how he's come into the team. The goals will come. We can see the threat is there. Fantastic today for the first time maybe in the matches, making runs beyond the defence line.”
Davids continued: “He can receive it wide; he can receive it inside; he can go in one against one. And now finally we saw the runs in behind. The goals will come.
“He (Mpanzu) has so many attacking skills within his arsenal. So, it's just a matter of time. And when he does start scoring, I'm afraid he won't stop.”
The win against Constantine enabled Simba to finish top of Group A.
