2022-23 CAF Confederation Cup winners USM Alger confirmed their status as leaders in Group C at the 2024-25 edition with a convincing 3-0 victory over Ivorian giants ASEC Mimosas on Sunday in Algiers. Ismail Belkacemi scored twice to become the top scorer of the competition with four goals after an own goal from ASEC put USMA into the lead.
It was a positive start from ASEC who bravely attempted an attacking strategy but things began to unravel after a 16th minute own goal from Mohamed Ali Yabré. Belkacemi converted from the penalty spot before halftime and added another in the 54th minute for USMA who have an unblemished record of nine goals scored and zero conceded in Group C play.
In the other match played earlier, Botswana's Orapa United and ASC Jaraaf canceled each other out with a 0-0 draw in Botswana. Neither club looks capable of challenging for a top-2 spot and qualification for the quarterfinals but there is still plenty of time to gain ground on ASEC who are only two points ahead.
