CAFCC Group D: Brown Ideye scores first goal for Enyimba; stalemate in all-Egyptian clash

Updated: 4 days ago

Nigerian club Enyimba are back in the chase for qualification to the quarterfinals of the CAF Confederation Cup following Sunday's 4-1 victory over Mozambique's Black Bulls in Uyo. Former Nigeria national team striker Brown Ideye was among the scorers for the Peoples' Elephant who are now only one point out of second place in Group D. In the other group clash, Egyptian clubs Zamalek and Al Masry played to an uneventful 0-0 draw.

It has been a chaotic time for Enyimba who were struggling on all fronts and parted ways with former coach Yemi Olanrewaju. A strong start saw Joseph Atule capitalize with a 6th minute strike after poor passing out of the back by Black Bulls led to a costly turnover. After Ejaita Efoni leveled soon after for the visitors, Ifeanyi Ihemekwele restored the lead with a powerful strike.

While the signing of 36-year-old Ideye provided some positive publicity, the veteran proved he can also contribute on the pitch. After debuting with a brief appearance in domestic league play earlier this week, Ideye came on earlier and clinched victory with a poacher's finish in the 67th minute before Atule scored his second late.

In a highly anticipated match, Al Masry and Zamalek supporters were left disappointed with few moments to enjoy in a 0-0 draw between the Egyptian clubs in Alexandria. Defending Confederation Cup champions Zamalek will be more satisfied with the result while Al Masry are now only a point ahead of Enyimba and Black Bulls in second place.
