USM Alger coach Marcos Paquetá said his team will now shift focus to domestic competitions after bowing out of the CAF Confederation Cup at the quarterfinal stage. USM Alger lost in a penalty shootout to fellow Algerian side CS Constantine at home following a 1-1 second leg draw.
The Brazilian coach noted that USM Alger conceded when they were the better side. “We scored in the first half but they had better possession. We were better in the second half but they scored,” said Paquetá.
He further praised his players for their resilience. “I thank my players because they fought hard until the final whistle. They are improving day by day. Now, we turn our attention to the league. Our objective now lies in the Coupe d’Algérie and the league. We must keep going despite the defeat.”
USM Alger’s hopes for continental glory will have to wait for another season following their painful exit from the Confederation Cup. USMA are currently fourth in Algeria's Ligue 1 Professionnelle and could potentially face fellow Algiers giants CR Belouizdad in the final of the Coupe d’Algérie.
