After three consecutive matches without a goal, defending champions Al Ahly of Egypt ended their attacking struggles in a 6-1 CAF Champions League victory over Algeria's CR Belouizdad on Sunday in Cairo. Wessam Abou Ali contributed a hat-trick for the Egyptian giants who came back from a first half deficit to score four unanswered goals, moving Ahly into first place in Group C.
It looked like more of the same from Ahly in the early stages with visitors CRB allowed to settle into the match. In the 21st minute Ahly supporters were left disappointed when a rapid counter attack from CRB saw winger Abderrahmane Meziane outrun the Ahly defense down the left wing. Meziane got to the end line before laying a pass back to Aymen Mahious for a hard shot that was too much for Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy.
However the hosts got a crucial leveler just before halftime and it was the Palestine national team striker Abou Ali who provided it. A turnover by CRB in the midfield allowed Ahly winger Hussein El Shahat to run at the defense. El Shahat's pass was deflected into the air and Abou Ali produced an instinctive striker's finish to equalize.
The momentum was shifted in Ahly's favor and the hosts finished off the match before the hour mark. Abou Ali produced a sublime curling effort from a free kick just outside the CRB penalty area and soon after it was 3-1 courtesy of El Shahat who finished between the legs of CRB keeper Moustapha Zeghba less than four minutes later.
Abou Ali added one more with a powerful strike in the 84th minute before Percy Tau and Emam Ashour completed the scoring in a convincing victory for Ahly and their supporters. Ahly move to the top of Group C, below is the updated table.
