Defending champions Al Ahly of Egypt repeated their first leg success over Al Hilal of Sudan on Tuesday, claiming another 1-0 victory in the second leg of their CAF Champions League quarterfinal duel held in Mauritania.
Having secured a 1-0 win in Cairo, the Egyptian giants once again proved superior, progressing to the semifinals with a 2-0 aggregate win.
The only goal of the match came in the 80th minute, when star midfielder Emam Ashour latched onto a clever through ball from Taher Mohamed. Despite close marking from a Hilal defender, Ashour slotted the ball into the net.
This is the fifth goal for Emam Ashour in this season's CAF Champions League making him the top scorer of the competition.
The first half lacked dangerous threats with both teams failing to create real chances. The tempo improved after the break, and Al Hilal managed to pose some threat to Al Ahly’s goal but couldn’t find the net.
With the win, Al Ahly advance to face South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns in the semifinals with the first leg set for either April 18 or 19 in Pretoria.
