There were no surprises in Saturday's late matches from Group D of the CAF Champions League as Tunisian giants Espérance ST and Egyptian big spenders Pyramids eased to victory at home in their final group stage games. Both clubs secured qualification to the quarterfinals today with only top spot in the group to play for between the two North African clubs.
Espérance confirmed themselves as group winners with a 4-1 victory over Angolan club Sagrada Esperança in Tunis. After falling behind by two goals, Dabanda struck just before halftime for visitors Sagrada to make the match somewhat interesting. However, Achref Jabri scored twice in the opening fifteen minutes of the second half to keep EST in first place.
Pyramids showed no mercy in Cairo with a 6-0 victory over Mali's Djoliba. The Egyptian Premier League contenders pounced early and often, taking a two-goal lead before ten minutes had elapsed. Despite finishing on the same amount of points as Espérance, the Egyptian club settled for second due to their inferior head-to-head record against the Tunisian club.
