Sudanese giants Al-Hilal now have two wins from their opening two matches in the CAF Champions League following Sunday's dramatic 2-1 victory over TP Mazembe in Nouakchott, Mauritania. Burundian attacker Jean Claude Girumugisha produced the winning goal in second half stoppage time for Hilal who are now back at the top of Group A. Mazembe are now on one point from two matches following the result.
Hilal, whose home base is in Mauritania due to the ongoing war in Sudan, were eager to follow up on their surprise opening match victory at Young Africans and seized the initiative. The hosts took the lead in the 21st minute when star striker Mohamed Abdelrahman converted a penalty kick after drawing a foul on Mazembe goalkeeper Alioune Badara Faty.
The visitors, who only arrived the night before due to travel delays, regrouped and began to show their quality. After a positive start to the second half the match was level in the 64th minute courtesy of Oscar Kabwit, who produced a curling effort that was too much for Hilal goalkeeper Issa Fofana.
In the end it was the hosts who emerged victorious, however, and it was substitute Girumugisha who provided the magical moment. The Burundian ran to meet a defense splitting pass and fired in past Badara Faty to give Hilal another victory.
