Hosts MC Alger mounted waves of attacks on Orlando Pirates but the Algerian club were stunned 1-0 by the visitors from South Africa in Tuesday's first leg from their CAF Champions League quarterfinal clash.

Mohau Nkota calmly finished from an assist by fellow Pirates youth academy product Relebohile Mofokeng in the 67th minute to silence MCA's fierce home support. The match winner came after sustained dominance from MC Alger who were left frustrated by inadequate finishing and stubborn defending from the Bucs defense.

The best opportunities for the hosts fell to the feet of young Guinean forward Mohamed Bangoura. The recent signing from Hafia FC got behind the Pirates defense on the right wing in the 24th minute but his shot was well saved by goalkeeper Sipho Chaine.

Another chance fell the way of Bangoura in the 53rd minute but a timely intervention from veteran Bucs defender Nkosinathi Sibisi prevented a shot on target. MCA's close misses set the stage for Nkota's stunning goal which came after an odd series of high headers in the midfield before Mofokeng's defense splitting pass.

MCA continued to threaten but failed to produce a clear opportunity as Pirates emerged victorious to snatch a one-goal advantage. The teams will meet again in Soweto with Pirates now the favorites to qualify for the semifinals.
