Mamelodi Sundowns defender Aubrey Modiba has expressed his desire to see the South African giants go all the way to the final of Caf Champions League and win it.
After a successful weekend in the Nedbank Cup, Sundowns will shift their focus to their first leg of the quarter-finals of the lucrative inter-club competition. The fixture against Esperance at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday, comes after Masandawana finished second in Group B.
Speaking ahead of the game, Modiba, who is no stranger to the continental competition said despite how tough the competition is, especially after the Brazilians were knocked out in the semi-finals stage last season, the team has talked about their desire to go all the way.
“I won’t lie, we’ve spoken about winning the Champions League. In these past seasons, we have fallen short in the semis and quarterfinals. We know these games aren’t easy and we fight every season to bring that second star,” Modiba told Sundowns’ official website.
“We currently have a good squad that’s ready to fight, and a technical team that is helping us. Hopefully this season we can go all the way. We want to see ourselves in the finals because we stand a better chance to win the Champions League. We will take each game as it comes. Now the focus is on tomorrow’s game and hopefully, we’ll get a good result.”
On his part, coach Miguel Cardoso delivered a message to the fans: ““These are moments and matches that need us to focus on getting desired results. What you should expect in this kind of match is achieving results. Connecting the minds for us to go and fight together properly helps the team grow. In this match, I expect our players to bring out their best performance on the field.”
Both teams will head into the battle field sitting at the top of their respective leagues. While Sundowns are leading the Betway Premiership with 58 points from 23 matches, Esperance are have garnered 53 points from 15 wins, eight draws and two defeats to lead the Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1.
The return leg is scheduled for 8 April at Stade Olympique Hammadi Agrebi in Tunis.
