Following a shock defeat in the opening match of their 2024 CAF Women's Champions League campaign, tournament favorites Mamelodi Sundowns took out their frustration on Ethiopia's CBE with a 4-0 victory to move back into contention in Group B on Wednesday. Melinda Kgadiete scored two goals with scoring contributions also coming from Joyce Rabale and Lelona Daweti to complete a dominant first half.
Heavy underdogs CBE got off to quite a good start against the South African giants who came out a bit sluggish in the opening fifteen minutes. However the quality of the defending champions became apparent after they opened the scoring in the 17th minute on their first opportunity of the match. Lebohang Ramalepe received a pass on the right wing and her cross found Nonhlanhla Mthandi, who set up Kgadiete for the low finish.
The onslaught of opportunities began for Sundowns who doubled their lead in the 25th minute through Rabale's routine finish after CBE struggled to clear an initial cross. Five minutes later the champions were well out of reach when Kgadiete completed her brace in style with a stellar diving header from a free kick service.
Daweti proceeded to make it four goals six minutes later, with an apparent fifth goal canceled out by a VAR review before halftime. The relentless pressure from Sundowns eased a bit after halftime and CBE showed some potential but could not threaten the goal of Andile Dlamini. Sundowns are set for an intriguing clash with Nigeria's Edo Queens when Group B finishes on Saturday while CBE are eliminated ahead of their duel with FC Masar of Egypt.
