Cameroon national side assistant coach Joachim Mununga was absent in the technical area on Wednesday when the Indomitable Lions were held to a barren draw by lowly ranked Eswatini in 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying. Head coach Marc Brys’s trusted assistant reportedly came into disagreement with the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT).
Mununga previously denied any rift with FECAFOOT but the recent decision not to allow him into the technical area tells another story. Speaking to state broadcaster CRTV, Mununga said he is here to serve the coach and the national side;
“I have known (head coach Marc) Brys for a long time. He also trained me but I am here to challenge him. My ambition is to serve Cameroon, the coach and the players.”
Brys was not happy with the development. On Tuesday, the Belgian lashed out to media at his dissatisfaction: “I cannot work with people I do not know and who are less competent. I need my assistant. (…) It is my right. I am the head coach, and I decide who should be on the bench, just like in other countries.”
Mununga is not under contract with the national side. The Cameroon government pays the monthly salaries of the technical staff but Mununga is yet to sign any sort of deal. Before the game against Eswatini, the Cameroonian Minister of Youth and Sports called on FECAFOOT to allow Mununga to be in the technical area as the disharmony continues between the two entities in charge of Cameroonian football.
