Cape Town City FC defender Lorenzo Gordinho has welcomed the international window as an opportunity for struggling South Africa’s Betway Premiership side to ‘clear its minds’.
Gordinho said this in reaction to the team’s nine-game winless run that cost the job of interim coach and technical director Muhsin Etrugral on Monday, March 17, 2025, two days after a 1-0 loss to Marumo Gallants in a league match.
“The international break comes at a great time for us. It lets us take a step back, clear our minds, and return in two weeks ready to tackle our goals” Gordinho told the club’s media.
The Turkish mentor has since sent his goodbye via a statement after the Citizens’ management announced that they parted ways with the coach on mutual grounds.
“It’s never easy to say goodbye, but sometimes the game leads us down unexpected paths,” he wrote.
The former Orlando Pirates handler left his role after a nine-game winless run across all competitions with Saturday’s loss to Gallants being the last straw.
Etrugral joined the team in January 2025 to replace Eric Tinkler, who was sacked while City were in 12th place. Now, the former Kaizer Chiefs trainer has left the side in 13th place.
The Cape Town-based team has since named first-team coach Diogo Peral as the caretaker mentor with Lebogang Manyama and Roger De Sa as his assistants.
