Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso believes his team did more than enough to score and win their Betway Premiership fixture against Golden Arrows but the level of officiating denied his side the opportunity to carry the day.
The Brazilians’ five game winning run in the top-flight was halted after Golden Arrows, under coach Manqoba Mngqithi, who was formerly at Sundowns and was taking charge of his first game, forced them to a 1-1 draw at Mpumalanga Stadium on Wednesday.
Abafana Bes'thende took the lead when Sbonelo Cele delivered a set-piece which allowed Keenan Phillips to head home but Brazilian Lucas Ribeiro levelled matters from the penalty spot after Phillips was adjudged to have handled a cross from Aubrey Modiba inside the box.
“I think we scored more than enough goals to win the match, as it was clear for everybody for sure, so we saw two teams working hard and we saw one team that was not on the level of the game,” Cardoso said after the game as quoted by SABC Sports.
“I think it's important to understand that the level of a league like this should also have [a similar] level from all the teams, unfortunately we saw things that I don't want to even speak about.
“It's the second game – there were two games where... Well, congratulations to my players, they made a good game, a very good second half, in terms of battling for the result, unfortunately we could not get it. Let's rest and continue to move forward in order to be as best as possible in the next matches.”
Despite the draw, Sundowns remained top of the 16-team league table with 55 points from 21 matches, while Arrows stayed 11th with 21 points from 17 outings.
