Mekele 70 Enderta has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding their midfielder Yeabsera Tesfaye. Tesfaye and the northern Ethiopian side were penalized by the Ethiopian Premier League Financial Control Taskforce for alleged illicit payments.
Mekele 70 Enderta officially disclosed that the matter will now be handled by CAS. In their official statement, the club stated that their attempt to reverse the penalty through the Ethiopian Football Federation Appeal Committee was unsuccessful. The EFF decided to uphold the decision made by the league, prompting Mekele 70 Enderta to seek other alternatives.
Mekele 70 Enderta noted that taking the matter to an Ethiopian court could have negative consequences, which is why they chose CAS to handle the case. Mechal and Sidama Coffee have already begun legal proceedings against the league in the Ethiopian federal court. Mekele 70 Enderta also stated that all the necessary documents have been made available to CAS. The club added that the case has been accepted by CAS.
The Ethiopian Premier League Share Company Board Chairman, Lieutenant Fekade Mamo, previously stated that the league can take cases to CAS to enforce its decisions. Pan-Africa Football understands that two other Ethiopian Premier League clubs are being investigated for illicit payments made to their new signings, bringing the total number of implicated top-flight clubs to six and involving more than 16 players.
