The Discipline Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is on verge of disqualifying the Republic of Congo from the postponed 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) which is due to begin in August in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
Congo Brazzaville beat Equatorial Guinea 2-1 on aggregate in the final round of qualifying to secure their ticket to the finals in East Africa. Nevertheless, according to Congolese media, Les Diables Rouges fielded an ineligible player in the doubleheader prompting CAF to banish the federation from sending a team to the finals.
During the CHAN group draw in Nairobi last week Congo were drawn against holders Senegal, Nigeria and Sudan in Group D.
Mankou Nguembete Japhet Eloi is the player that is implicated for ineligibility on Congo side after taking the pitch against Equatorial Guinea, spurring Congo's opponents to pursue the case. As a result the discipline committee of CAF is expected to disqualify Congo and replace it with Equatorial Guinea.
In addition to the ineligibility fiasco, CAF is said to be not recognizing FECOFOOT led by Bruno Monka. FECOFOOT has continued to experience leadership issues ever since a large group of top division clubs in the country declared their opposition to the organization of FECOFOOT. The result has been ongoing disorganization and disputes between FECOFOOT and an ad hoc committee that was formed in late 2024, increasing the potential for sanctions from FIFA and CAF.
