Coach of Nigeria’s home based Super Eagles Daniel Ogunmodede has revealed the tactics that helped them beat Ghana in the second leg 2024 CHAN qualifiers.
Nigeria managed a goalless draw at the Accra Sports Stadium in the first leg last week before triumphing by 3-1 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, December 28.
The victory sends Nigeria into the main tournament to be hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania next year. Ogunmodede said: “I’m happy for the country, I’m happy for the players. We wanted to make our people happy and so I’m so excited we were able to give our people something to happy about,” Ogunmodede said.
“We understudied the Ghana team, there was nothing we found out about their strength apart from history. “Their strength is history and tried to blindfold ourselves to history and we were just determined to break the yoke.
“They are very technically sound, they play through the channel and they make deliveries. “So they came highline and broke the line in the first half and the second goal came from our strength which is set pieces.
“The third goal was also we broke the line and I think in the second half we quickly and put more men forward.” Ogunmodede said.
It was a perfect revenge for Nigeria who suffered elimination against Ghana in the last qualifying edition via the penalty shootouts. Ghana’s football has seen a major decline in the last few years, having failed to qualify for the next Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The four time African champions will now shift focus to the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Chad in March.
