Head coach of Nigeria’s home based national team, Daniel Ogunmodede has admitted that, they had to stay back against Ghana in the first half in order not to concede any goal.
Nigeria held their Ghanaian rivals to a goalless draw in the first leg qualifier of the 2024 Championship for Africa Nations at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.
Ghana created a number of chances against the visibly laid back Nigerian side but failed to score in the first half leaving the tiny fans at the stadium searching for answers.
Nigeria’s second half was better than the first and head coach of the side, Daniel Ogunmoded says, it was a strategy to soak the pressure in the first half in order to look better in the second department of the game.
“We were scared of the Ghanaians in the first half but we were better in the second half right? We will take it from there and we are going to be best on our home ground,” Daniel Ogunmodede told Pan-Africa Football.
“We have our chance to qualify and we are going to take it, obviously as giants of Africa, we know how important it is for players, our local league, for what our sports Federations is trying to build for the nation.
“We know how important it is for the young players coming up, in the nearest future, how important it is for them. I’m an indigenous and we are trying to go one step ahead of what we were the last time as a country, as a Federation and in showing these, there must be indicators.”
The second leg will be played at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on December 28 with the winner of both legs qualifying for the main tournament in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
