Mozambique Football Federation (FMF) president Feizal Sidat has revealed exclusively to Pan-Africa Football the reason behind Mambas’ withdrawal from the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers.
“Yes, [ we withdrew) due to the political situation in Mozambique. There is civil war,” he said in a brief interview on Thursday.
Mozambique were due to face Zambia in the final qualifying round for CHAN this weekend but pulled out giving the Copper Bullets a safe passage to the CHAN finals.
Earlier, southern Africa’s qualifiers for the Under-17 girls and boys Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) were also shifted from Mozambique to South Africa due to post-election violence in the former Portuguese colony.
There are countrywide protests in Mozambique as opposition political parties dispute the outcome of the October 9 2024 presidential elections which Daniel Chapo from the ruling FRELIMO party won.
The unrest has led to the deaths and injuries of many people during street demonstrations in Mozambique where opposition political parties accuse FRELIMO of rigging the elections. The ruling party insists its candidate won the polls fairly.
