Sudan are close to confirming their qualification for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Christmas Day following a 2-1 second leg victory over Ethiopia in Libya. Musa Kanti and captain Mohamed Abdelrahman scored for the Nile Crocodiles who confirmed a 4-1 aggregate victory after previously winning the first leg 2-0 at the same venue.

Due to the competition being co-hosted by East African nations Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya, only one more nation will qualify from East Africa's CECAFA region. Sudan are currently leading the table but South Sudan can overtake them if the Bright Stars defeat Rwanda by two goals when the teams meet over the weekend in Kigali.
After failing to progress from the group stage at the 2022 edition in Algeria, Sudan would have high ambitions if they qualify considering the CHAN team has many of the same players who successfully qualified the senior national team to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Sudan previously finished third at the 2011 and 2018 editions of the CHAN.
