Uganda, 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) co-hosts, defeated Burundi 1-0 in the first leg of their 2024 CHAN qualifying clash played on Thursday. Isaac Ogwang scored the only goal in the first half of the match played at the Hamz Stadium in Kampala, the home leg for Burundi who could not host the match due to lacking a stadium approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Favorites Uganda were in control throughout. Vipers SC playmaker Allan Okello fired over the bar inside ten minutes and Jude Semugabi's effort was deflected off target close to the twenty minute mark.

However the reward for the Cranes' dominance arrived in the 36th minute. High pressing allowed Ogwang to win the ball off a Burundi defender close to the box and the Police FC player maneuvered past another defender before firing his low finish into the goal.

The two teams will meet again at the same venue on Sunday. Regardless of the result, Uganda have already qualified as co-hosts along with Kenya and Tanzania. One additional nation rated as the best performing team outside of the three co-hosts will qualify from East Africa's CECAFA region. After defeating Ethiopia in both legs of their qualifying clash, Sudan will claim that spot unless South Sudan defeats Rwanda in Kigali by two or more goals in the second leg of their clash on Saturday.
