CHAN 2024 Qualifying Updates: Central African Republic stun Cameroon; Nigeria, Burkina Faso, DR Congo and Senegal qualify

This weekend will see the 19-team field determined for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) co-hosted by East African nations Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya with six second leg clashes still set for Saturday. There is already an early upset on the day after Central African Republic shocked Cameroon with a 2-1 second leg victory in Bafoussam. A late goal confirmed the victory and a 2-2 aggregate result for Les Fauves, who qualified for the CHAN finals for the first time due to the away goals rule.


In the other notable matches from Saturday, Ghana and Nigeria will resolve the latest iteration of their Jollof Derby in Nigeria after a 0-0 first leg result. South Sudan need to win by two goals in Rwanda to qualify at the expense of Sudan while Ivory Coast, Guinea, Angola and Senegal are the heavy favorites in their respective second leg clashes. Cameroon 1-2 Central African Republic


It looked like Central African powerhouse Cameroon were set to qualify after scoring in the first half to go ahead 2-0 on aggregate. However, Les Fauves fought back with a penalty kick just before halftime and then a late goal to stun the Local Lions who fail to qualify after reaching the previous four editions of the CHAN. It will be a debut at the final tournament for Central African Republic who continue to make major strides in African football.

Guinea-Bissau (1) vs Guinea (4)- Bissau, Guinea-Bissau

Nigeria (0) vs Ghana (0)- Uyo, Nigeria

Rwanda (2) vs South Sudan (3)- Kigali, Rwanda


Burkina Faso and Guinea-Bissau have plenty of work to do in their home matches to get back into contention to qualify. South Sudan must win by two or more goals in Kigali to overtake Sudan and join co-hosts Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya at the final tournament. In what is sure to be a fiercely contested match, Nigeria and Ghana will face off in Uyo, Nigeria where the hosts are hungry for revenge after missing out on the 2022 edition at the hands of the Black Galaxies of Ghana.

Nigeria are enjoying themselves in Uyo! The hosts continue to dominate rivals Ghana in the second leg with dazzling football and three goals in the span of six minutes from the first half. Burkina Faso are back in their tie with neighbors Ivory Coast, one goal behind in the aggregate score after taking a 1-0 halftime lead in Bamako. Rwanda and Guinea-Bissau are ahead as well at home in their second leg clashes.

Burkina Faso win 4-2 in penalty kick shootout


Ghana strike in the second half through Stephen Amankona but it is not enough for the Black Galaxies who were outclassed by hosts Nigeria with a strong first half. In another West African derby, Burkina Faso shocked a fancied Ivorian team by winning 2-0 in Bamako to level the aggregate score before winning the penalty shootout.

Rwanda and South Sudan end level but neither team will qualify as Sudan were the best performers in the East African region to join co-hosts Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya at the CHAN finals. Burkina Faso and rivals Ivory Coast appear set for a penalty shootout to determine who qualifies.

Lesotho have made this tie interesting! A first half penalty from the visitors leaves Angolan supporters a bit nervous with the hosts now ahead only 2-1 on the aggregate score. Second half set to kick off soon.

Lesotho made a valiant effort in Luanda, converting a penalty kick in the first half to come within one goal of heavy favorites Angola. However the Palancas Negras hold off the visitors in the second half and do just enough to secure qualification for the CHAN finals.

DR Congo (1) vs Chad (1)- Kinshasa, DR Congo

DR Congo 1-0 Chad (2-1 aggregate)


Defending champions Senegal have taken the lead against visiting Liberia to give the Local Lions the edge on the aggregate score before doubling the lead shortly before halftime. Liberia will now need two goals away from home to advance.

DR Congo 3-0 Chad (4-1 aggregate)


The defending champions are through to the finals after a comfortable 3-0 victory in Dakar for Senegal. DR Congo have also confirmed their qualification in similar fashion with a comfortable 3-0 victory in Kinshasa over Chad. Young TP Mazembe star Oscar Kabwit was among the scorers for the Leopards who are always a strong contender in the CHAN.
