Malawi senior national football team coach, Kalisto Pasuwa, says the Flames were jittery in their 2-0 win over Comoros in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) play-offs on Saturday.

Reacting to the victory, Pasuwa praised his players for overcoming first-half nerves to win the second-leg match at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

“Well done to Malawi and all of us for reaching the second round of the playoffs. It wasn’t easy in the first half—we were jittery—but in the second half, we spoke to the players and got the goals,” he told the media.

Second-half goals from FCB Nyasa Big Bullets midfielder Wongani Lungu and striker Binwell Katinji won the game for the Flames who had beaten the visitors by a similar margin in the first-leg on March 2, 2025.

The Flames will date either Egypt or South Africa, who drew one-all in the first leg last week, in the final qualifying round of the continental competition exclusive to home-based players.

It was the fifth win in six meetings for Malawi against the islanders across all competitions and a back-to-back victory for Pasuwa since being appointed as a full-time coach last month.

The Zimbabwean has presided over four games, winning thrice and drawing once, including when he was the caretaker coach. In the opposite camp, Zainoudine Msoili’s side played both home and away matches at the Lilongwe venue due to the non-approval of Maluzini Stadium back home.

Malawi now shifts focus to their next game in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, where they will face Namibia at Bingu National Stadium on March 20.
