Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca says he is determined to ensure Senegalese striker Nicolas Jackson returns to full match fitness and starts scoring again after a lengthy injury lay-off.
The Chelsea boss said this after featuring Jackson alongside Cole Palmer on Thursday when the Premier League side lost -1 to Legia Warsaw at Stamford Bridge.
“For Nico, he has been out for more than two months, so the idea to play with him was to build his physical condition. The plan was 45 minutes,” Maresca told Chelsea media.
The coach further justified his decision to retain the former Villarreal FC’s Senegalese attacker alongside Palmer from the squad that played against Ipswich Town last weekend.
“The main target for them was to help build their physical condition. If they were able to score, it could be a good boost for them. Hopefully, very soon, Nico and Cole will start to score goals because they are very important for us. At this moment, the one scoring is Cucu and this is a good thing, as he is the one who doesn’t need to score goals,” he added.
Despite the defeat to Warsaw on Thursday, the Blues progressed to the UEFA Conference League semi-finals 4-2 on aggregate and date Swedish side Djurgarden.
The Blues’ next assignment is against Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday.
