Zamalek head coach Christian Gross admitted that he anticipated a tough encounter in the Egyptian Premier League match against Ceramica Cleopatra, held on Thursday evening.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, the Swiss coach said:
"The opposing team is strong at exploiting counter-attacks. We had possession for long periods but lacked greater effectiveness in Ceramica’s penalty area. We have a lot of work to do in the coming period. Overall, it was a difficult match."
Gross also highlighted missed opportunities that could have secured victory:
"We squandered two clear chances to score and win the game. We should have capitalized on our opportunities better, but unfortunately, we didn’t."
On Nasser Maher’s participation and injury
Addressing the situation with Nasser Maher, Gross stated:
"The medical staff informed me that the player was 100% fit to participate, but he sustained another injury after coming on in the second half."
Praise for Zamalek fans and future plans
The coach expressed his admiration for Zamalek supporters, saying:
"I love the Zamalek fans because they are great. We always need their encouragement, and we apologize to them for not achieving victory today."
Gross also discussed tactical instructions given to his players:
"I spoke with the attacking players about the need to position themselves inside the penalty area. As for Michalak, our Polish foreign player, I expect a lot from him in the coming period."
On Ahmed Sayed "Zizo"
Gross downplayed any negative impact on Ahmed Sayed "Zizo" after missing out on the CAF Interclub Player of the Year award:
"Losing the award did not affect him negatively. He is a very professional player with a fantastic personality. He was with me during my first stint and always delivers what is required of him. He is very important to me and the team."
