Vipers SC returned to the summit of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League table with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over bottom-placed Soltilo Bright Stars at Kavumba Recreation Ground on Saturday.

First-half goals from Gusto Mulongo and in-form forward Allan Okello gave the Venoms a crucial lead. Mulongo opened the scoring in the 16th minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse from a Moses Waiswa corner.

Four minutes later, Okello struck his seventh goal of the campaign, finishing off a Karim Watambala cut-back. Soltilo Bright Stars halved the deficit in the 30th minute when Warren Buule took advantage of Vipers’ failure to clear a free-kick.

Despite late pressure from the hosts, Vipers held firm to secure their seventh win of the season, moving to 24 points from 11 games, one point clear of second-placed NEC, who drew 1-1 with URA FC on Thursday.

Reflecting on the win, Vipers coach Fred Muhumuza admitted it wasn’t a polished performance but commended his players for their resilience. "We didn’t put up a very good show. At times we know that players become complacent. But I want to thank the players for the character and energy they exhibited today to get the three points," said Muhumuza.

The defeat leaves Soltilo Bright Stars rooted to the bottom of the table with just six points, increasing pressure on head coach Asaph Mwebaze as they search for only their second win of the campaign.
