A new twist has engulfed Sierra Leone's football following the release of Sierra Leone Football Association President Thomas Daddy Brima, Acting General Secretary Mohamed Benson Bawoh and Finance Manager Ibrahim Ba after arrests on alleged corruption charges.

The trio were picked up by the Sierra Leone Anti-Corruption Commission [ACC] on Thursday, April 3 ahead of the much anticipated Sierra Leone Football Association Congress on Saturday.

However, in what seems a sharp turn of events, Anti-Corruption Commissioner Francis Ben Kaifala ordered the release on bail of the three without sureties on Friday paving the way for a smooth congress much to the relief of the country's football fraternity.

The Union of Premier League Clubs have been forced to step down from the Sierra Leone National Premier League in protest and solidarity with Brima. The FA president affirmed his innocence after his release in a short statement:

“Today, on my release from CID on alleged graft by the ACC, I encourage the Commissioners to do their utmost best in proving their claims. As a President who believes in fostering the development of football, I am sure that there is nothing to hide in the cupboard. My four years have been about making the game a beautiful one for all. Let justice be done. Football must develop in Sierra Leone.”

Sierra Leone were suspended by FIFA in 2018 for similar governmental troubles under former FA boss Isha Johansen and the current administration will look to avoid the world governing body’s wrath this time.
