Moghreb Tetouan and second division side USM Oujda took down the giants of Casablanca in a sensational day of matches from Morocco's Coupe du Trône on Saturday.
After Olympique Safi defeated fellow top flight Botola Pro side Jeunesse Sportive Soualem to begin the day of Round of 16 matches, Mogheb Tetouan began the surprise results by defeating Wydad Casablanca 1-0. A prestigious victory for the men from the far north, who thus secured their place in the quarterfinals.
Despite several clear chances, Wydad lacked efficiency in front of goal. A powerful shot from Jalal Daoudi that flew over the bar and a dangerous effort from Bilal El Meghri in the 34th minute, saved by WAC goalkeeper Youssef El Motie, summed up the Reds' first half.
After Wydad forward Samuel Obeng grazed the post in the 47th minute, tt was finally MAT captain Ayoub Lakhal, who found the net in the 78th minute. His powerful shot from outside the box surprised El Motie and sent the Stade Saniat R'mel crowd into an explosion of joy.
But Wydad's elimination paled in comparison to the cup classic produced by Botola 2 side USM Oujda, who slayed the Green Eagles of Raja Casablanca 2-1 after extra time. Gibraltar national team forward Ayoub El Hmidi dribbled his way past multiple Raja defenders before firing in the winner for USMO in the 116th minute after both sides were reduced to ten players.
The Coupe is wide open now with AS FAR Rabat and RS Berkane now looking like the most likely candidates. Both teams will play their Round of 16 matches at a later dates due to CAF club competition obligations. Three matches will take place on Sunday to see who joins MAT, Olympique Safi and USMO.
