Crested Cranes head coach Sheryl Botes has clarified the absence of first-choice goalkeeper Ruth Aturo from the squad that traveled to Ethiopia for the return leg of the 2026 WAFCON Qualifiers.

Aturo, who played a key role in Uganda’s 2-0 first-leg victory at Hamz Stadium, was left out of the traveling contingent that departed on Sunday, raising eyebrows among fans and pundits.

Speaking on the decision, Botes revealed that the Tausi FC shot-stopper suffered an Achilles tendon issue during the home fixture, and medical assessments ruled her out of the crucial away tie.

“We have Ruth Aturo, our first-choice goalkeeper, but she had a challenge in the home match. She struggled with an Achilles tendon issue, and after medical examination, we found out that she isn’t in a position to give us what we need for the away game,” Botes explained.

In Aturo’s absence, Kampala Queens goalkeeper Daisy Nakaziro is expected to step up between the posts, with Lilian Nakiirya also part of the squad in Ethiopia.

The decisive second-leg clash against Ethiopia is set for Wednesday, February 26, 2026, at Abebe Bikila Stadium in Addis Ababa.
