Olympique de Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi has revealed the reason why Amine Gouiri was dropped for Marseille's latest Ligue 1 match this past weekend. OM beat Toulouse 3-2 at the Stade Vélodrome without their young Algerian striker.
The Italian coach stated that Gouiri needed a rest after a busy March. “He's played a lot recently — in Paris, then twice with the national team and then against Reims. I've been told it will be a week or ten days,” said De Zerbi.
The workload and limited recovery time forced the OM coach to give Gouiri a much-needed rest as the club pushes for a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League: “He should be back on Tuesday, and we hope to have him back for the Monaco match on Saturday.”
Since joining Marseille from Stade Rennes in January, Gouiri has established himself as a key player for the southern French outfit. His superb performances earned him the Ligue 1 Player of the Month award for February. Gouiri is also a nominee for Ligue 1's prestigious Prix Marc-Vivien Foé awarded to the best player in the league who represents an African national team.
