A dramatic development has emerged in the investigation into the death of Vipers SC’s Nigerian striker, Abubakar Lawal.
Authorities in Uganda have arrested Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national, who is believed to have been the last person in the company of Lawal before his untimely demise on Monday. Naima is currently detained at Kajjansi Police Station in Wakiso District as investigators intensify their search for additional suspects.
According to Luke Owoyesigyire, deputy spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, preliminary findings suggest that the incident may not have been a mere accident. The police confirmed that Lawal's death occurred after falling from the third floor at the Voicemall Shopping Arcade.
“The crime scene evidence points to the involvement of a third party, which makes it highly unlikely that the victim jumped from the balcony on his own. We are pursuing further leads,” he stated.
In a statement released by Uganda Police on Monday evening, details emerged regarding the circumstances leading up to Lawal’s death. Lawal had reportedly arrived at the Voicemall Shopping Arcade in his vehicle to meet Naima, who lives in room 416 of the complex. Naima explained that she had left Lawal in the room while he prepared tea, only to later discover that Lawal had fallen from the balcony.
Lawal was rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Among the personal belongings recovered from his black backpack were two smartphones, a pair of open shoes, headsets, a training kit and chargers.
As investigators gather CCTV footage and carry out extensive interrogations, the football community reels from the shock of Lawal’s sudden death.
In a show of respect and mourning, Vipers SC has announced a public memorial service to be held on Thursday at St Mary’s Stadium, with details shared via the club’s social media channels.
