Uganda Cranes’ youngster Travis Mutyaba has expressed his joy and gratitude after playing a pivotal role in leading the national team to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 in Morocco.
Speaking exclusively to Pan-Africa Football, Mutyaba shared his thoughts on the milestone achievement:
“I feel so happy that I have achieved this milestone of going to the AFCON with the senior team at my first attempt at this level which has been a dream to me," Mutyaba stated. "As a player, I believe the teamwork amongst us has been very instrumental in our journey. I also thank FUFA for the trust they have put in us to represent the national team at such big levels."
The 19-year-old midfielder, who has had an illustrious year with a CAF Confederation Cup triumph at Egyptian giants Zamalek before sealing a move to French side Girondins de Bordeaux, also lauded the unwavering support of Uganda's fans and the significance of returning to Namboole Stadium.
“I can’t forget to thank our fans who have always been behind us in all conditions but again the return to Mandela National Stadium, Namboole has played a huge role in our campaign. We feel at home playing in front of our fans,” he added.

A Rising Star
Mutyaba has been instrumental in Uganda Cranes’ journey through Group K of the qualifiers, featuring in all the matches. His performances on the pitch reflect his rapid rise in Ugandan football.
A trailblazer, he became the first Ugandan to win the CAF Confederation Cup earlier this year, cementing his place among the country’s top talents.
This achievement is even more remarkable given the setbacks Mutyaba faced early in his career. He missed out on the 2021 U-17 AFCON Tournament in Morocco with Uganda Cubs due to the COVID-19 pandemic but bounced back to play at the 2023 U-20 AFCON in Egypt with the Uganda Hippos.

An Inspiration for the Future
Mutyaba is among the few Ugandan players to have risen through the ranks of the youth national teams, from U15 to the senior Cranes. His journey is an inspiration to young players aiming to follow in his footsteps.
Looking ahead to AFCON 2025, Mutyaba is optimistic about the opportunity for him and his teammates to showcase their talent on the continental stage.
“The AFCON tournament in Morocco in 2025 will be a huge stage and a big opportunity for us. We are ready to give our best,” he said.
Cranes’ Campaign in Review
Uganda Cranes secured qualification from Group K with two games to spare, a testament to their impressive campaign.
While the recent loss to South Africa at home dampened celebrations, the team is focused on ending their qualifying campaign on a high as they face Congo Brazzaville this evening.
