National Bank claimed a 2-0 away victory against Modern Sport in the first leg of the Egypt Capital Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday, putting them in a strong position ahead of the return leg on May 20.
After a goalless first half, the deadlock was broken in the 73rd minute when Yaw Annor found the back of the net. The goal came after a fine team move: Osama Faisal delivered a cross into the box, which Ahmed Yasser Rayyan headed, allowing Annor to finish with a header past the goalkeeper.
Ahmed Yasser Rayyan then sealed the win with a second goal deep into stoppage time. The striker latched onto a long ball from left-back Yakubu Issahaku, dribbled a Modern Sport defender, and slotted a left-footed shot into the net in the 93rd minute.
The victory gives National Bank a clear advantage ahead of the second leg, which they will host on Tuesday, May 20.
In another quarter-final first leg, Ismaily were held to a goalless draw at home against Tala'ea El Gaish. Their return leg is also scheduled for Tuesday, May 20.
One first leg match remains in the quarterfinal round, as Ceramica Cleopatra are going to host Petrojet on Thursday, April 24 at 5:00 PM GMT.
