Al Ahly stumbled once again as they were held to a 1-1 draw against Pharco in the 9th round of the Egyptian Premier League on Wednesday.
Pharco took the lead in the 22nd minute through a brilliant long-range strike by Zouhair El Moutaraji, the former Wydad Casablanca attacker who scored twice in the final against Al Ahly when Wydad won the 2021-22 CAF Champions League.
However, Al Ahly equalized deep into stoppage time of the first half, with Emam Ashour converting a penalty with precision in the 11th minute of added time.
The match witnessed Al Ahly's lack of squad depth in attack, as the team had no senior strikers available. Youngster Samir Mohamed started on the bench with Wessam Abou Ali sidelined due to injury and Mahmoud Kahraba absent amid reports of an imminent transfer to Al Ittihad of Libya.
This result marks Al Ahly's second consecutive setback across all competitions, following a 2-1 defeat to Orlando Pirates in their final CAF Champions League group-stage match. It is also Al Ahly’s fourth draw in nine league matches this season.
Later in the day, Pyramids FC defeated ZED FC to replace Al Ahly at the top of the table ahead of a highly anticipated clash between the two Egyptian titans on Sunday (17:00 GMT).
