Al Ahly defeated Smouha 2-0 in a previously postponed Round 5 fixture of the Nile Egyptian Premier League. The match, played unusually early at 2:00 PM GMT, marked a rare kickoff time for Al Ahly.
Mohamed Magdy "Afsha" opened the scoring for Al Ahly with a header in the third minute of first-half stoppage time. The goal came after an excellent cross from left-back Karim El Debees, who replaced Yahia Attiat Allah due to an injury earlier in the match that required the Moroccan to be taken to the hospital.
Emam Ashour doubled Al Ahly's lead in the 50th minute. The midfielder received a pass from Hussein El Shahat through the Smouha defense before rounding goalkeeper Mohamed Ashraf and slotting the ball into an empty net. His celebration drew attention as he brought out a white balloon, inflated it and then deflated it in a manner reminiscent of Chelsea player Christopher Nkunku.
Al Ahly’s head coach Marcel Koller attended this game after missing the team’s training session the previous day due to a health issue. Ahly moved back to the top of the table with the victory with one point separating them from eternal rivals Zamalek.
