Former Togolese international Emmanuel Adebayor has named his greatest African footballer of all time. The 40-year-old former striker spoke to Optus Sport as he revealed who he fancies to take the throne of the greatest African footballer ever.

The ex-Arsenal and Spurs forward cited Liberian legend George Weah as the greatest player that had graced the continent so far. “I was a child when Mr. George Oppong Weah was playing. But since my retirement I had played two testimonial games with him. He is the only African that won the Ballon d’Or. He achieved a lot of things that we dreamt of. I will definitely go for Weah.”

Weah played in France, Italy and England. The Liberian won the Ballon d’Or in 1995 while he was at AC Milan. Known for his scoring qualities and strong runs, Weah is idolized by many Africans. Adebayor also put Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o in his list with the former Barcelona star ranked second by the former Arsenal and Manchester City marksman.

“Don’t get me wrong. Samuel Eto’o is somewhere there because of what he has done with Barcelona and Inter. He is incredible. Those two are up there. If I have to pick one, I will definitely pick Mr. President George Oppong Weah.”

Adebayor is the 2007 BBC African Player of the Year and the 2008 African Player of Year winner. His career spanned more than two decades where he guided Togo to qualification for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, the only time the West African nation has reached world football's biggest stage.
