In a surprising turn of events, ENPPI secured a 1-0 victory over Al Ahly in the first round of the Egypt Capital Cup (League Cup) group stage.

Al Ahly opted to field a squad mainly composed of backup players who do not feature regularly, providing them with opportunities while also resting key starters. Additionally, some first-team players were absent due to international duty with their respective national teams.

Despite struggling in the Nile Egyptian League and sitting at the bottom of the relegation group standings, ENPPI managed to overcome Al Ahly’s rotated lineup to claim a win.

The only goal of the match came deep into stoppage time in the 92nd minute. A defensive lapse in Al Ahly’s offside trap allowed ENPPI’s Mostafa Dowidar to deliver a cross into the box. Hossam Evouna’s initial header was saved by Al Ahly goalkeeper Hamza Alaa, but Ahmed Zaki pounced on the rebound, slotting the ball into the net unmarked.

Key player returns for Al Ahly

The match marked the return of Tunisian left-back Ali Maâloul, who had been sidelined since May due to an injury suffered against Espérance in the CAF Champions League final first leg. Moroccan defender Yahia Attiyat Allah also made his comeback, featuring for the first time in over two months following his own injury.

Breaking Streaks

ENPPI’s victory ended their three-match losing streak across all competitions.

Meanwhile, this defeat was Al Ahly’s first on the pitch in their last 10 full matches. Their previous loss was recorded as a forfeit because they didn't show up in the Cairo Derby against Zamalek.
