Cape Town City FC has sacked coach Eric Tinkler after a run of poor results in South Africa's Betway Premiership.

The club’s statement says they have agreed to part ways mutually with the Bafana Bafana legend who was part of the class of players who won the Africa Cup of Nations title on home soil in 1996.

“The club expresses gratitude towards Eric for the last three seasons where he presided over 2nd, 4th and 5th place finishes,” the statement reads. "We wish Eric the very best for the future.  The club will announce a new interim coach as we build up to an exciting new project for the 25/26 season and beyond.”

The future of the former Bafana Bafana midfielder, who replaced Benni McCarthy at the Cape Town club three seasons ago, was thrown into doubt after poor results. The Citizens are slightly above the relegation zone in 12th place with 11 points after managing just three wins in 10 games along with two draws and five defeats, the latest being a 0-1 loss to AmaZulu FC on Sunday. The club have lost four of their last six league matches.

City, who are likely to have Lebohang Manyama holding fort in a caretaker capacity, return to action with a home league meeting against Kaizer Chiefs on January 5.

He is the second coaching casualty from Tuesday after Chippa United coach Kwanele Kopo parted ways with the club when his contract expired.
