Ugandan duo Fahad Bayo and Musa Ramathan have finally received clearance to play for Welwalo Adigrat University FC, paving the way for their much-anticipated debuts, Friday, March 7, against Mekelakeya FC at Adama Science and Technology University Stadium.
The pair had been sidelined due to work permit delays since completing their moves to the Ethiopian Premier League club, but sources confirm that by Thursday evening, all necessary paperwork had been finalized, with only final approval pending.
With the green light now given, Bayo and Ramathan are available for selection in what could be a crucial game for their struggling side. The former MFK Vyskov players, who parted ways with the Czech club over a contractual dispute, have been training with Welwalo Adigrat while awaiting clearance.
FIFA recently ruled in Bayo’s favor, ordering MFK Vyskov to compensate him with $55,000 for the breach. Their arrival on the pitch comes at a critical juncture for Welwalo Adigrat, who are bottom of the table with just 8 points from 18 matches, sitting 13 points adrift of safety.
They were forced to miss their new club’s 1-1 draw against Sidama Bunna last weekend but could now be key figures in the club’s battle for survival. Meanwhile, their opponents, Mekelakeya FC, feature another Ugandan, goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi, in their ranks.
Bayo and Ramathan join the the growing presence of Ugandan talent in Ethiopia’s top flight, joining players such as Tom Ikara (Sidama Bunna), Geofrey Wasswa (Ethiopian Bunna), Brian Aheebwa (Arba Minch), Charles Musiige (Dire Dawa), Simon Peter Oketch (CBE), Allan Kayiwa (Ethiopia Insurance), and Martin Kizza (Fasil Kenema).
