The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) has honored two long serving Ethiopian women internationals Birtukan Geberekristos and Rehima Zergaw. Geberekristos retired from international football at the beginning of January 2025.

Zergaw announced her retirement in 2022 after sustaining injury.

At the halftime of the Women African Cup of Nations qualifier between Ethiopia and Uganda at the Abebe Bikila Memorial Stadium, EFF president Isayas Jira handed out a token of appreciation for the former players. The Federation also gave a gold necklace for both players.

Geberekristos donned the Lucy shirt for 24 years. She first got a call up to the national side in 2004 where she helped Ethiopia finish WAFCON being fourth. The talented midfielder won multiple league trophies with Central College, Dedebit and Commercial Bank of Ethiopia.

She still plays for CBE in the Ethiopian Women Premier League. The veteran was called up for the 2026 WAFCON qualifier games but rejected the offer citing her place should be given to younger players.

Zergaw was on the national side roster from 2007 up until 2022. She led Ethiopia’s attack during the 2012 WAFCON in Equatorial Guinea. She is best known for her goal scoring prowess with CBE.
